On a day when four favorites captured Breeders' Cup races at Arlington Park, a 43-1 outsider won the Classic.

Overlooked Volponi swept to a six-length victory in the $4 million Classic, a race that was advertised as a showdown of the leading three-year-olds.

Volponi, ridden by Jose Santos, won for the first time since July and snapped a streak of two consecutive second-place finishes. The four-year-old earned $2 million with the win to bring his earnings to $2.7 million.

On the turn for home Volponi squeezed between horses to take the lead at the top of the stretch. Travers winner Medaglia d'Oro gained second followed by Milwaukee Brew and Evening Attire in the 12-horse field. The time for the 1 1/4 miles was 2:01.39.

Finishing off the board was Kentucky Derby winner War Emblem and Pacific Classic winner Came Home. War Emblem, who also won the Preakness, was eighth, and Came Home finished 11th. The win by Volponi makes the race for Horse of the Year wide open.

Volponi is owned by Amherst Stable and Spruce Pond Stable. The colt is trained by Philip Johnson. This is the second biggest upset in the Breeders' Cup Classic. In 1993 Arcangues won at 133-1.

Volponi returned $89.00, $26.80 and $12.40. Medaglia d'Oro paid $4.60 and $3.60, and Milwaukee Brew paid $9.60 for show.

The 2003 Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships will be held at Santa Anita Park. The races will be run on Saturday, October 25.
