The pace in the Filly & Mare Turf was set by Kazzia from the outside post in the 12-horse field. Kazzia and Chopinana raced one-two for much of the event, with Starine loping along about six lengths behind. Coming off the final turn, the leaders faded as a group of runners began their drive. Starine proved the best as she finished 1 1/2 lengths in front of last year's winner Banks Hill. Finishing third was Islington, while favorite Golden Apples was fourth. Starine is owned and trained by Bobby Frankel and ridden by John Velazquez. The five-year-old won $500,000 to bring her career earnings to more than $1.5 million. This was her first win of the year after a pair of second-place finishes as well as a fourth last time out. Starine returned $28.40, $10.00 and $8.40. Banks Hill paid $5.60 and $4.40, while Islington paid $4.80 for show. The 2003 Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships will be held at Santa Anita Park. The races will be run on Saturday, October 25.
