Please note that the distance this year has increased from 1 1/16 miles to 1 1/8 miles due to the layout of the track. The undefeated Vindication cruised to a 2 3/4-length victory in the $1 million Juvenile. The time for the 1 1/8 miles was 1:49 3/5. This was the first time the Juvenile was competed at that distance. Vindication dueled with Bull Market for most of the race until the top of the stretch. Vindication assumed the lead with a furlong to go. Finishing second was Kafwain and Hold That Tiger was third. Bull Market faded to fourth. Historically, the winner of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile is the early Kentucky Derby favorite. However, no Juvenile winner has ever won the Run for the Roses. Vindication is owned by Padua Stables and trained by Bob Baffert. Jockey Mike Smith gained his second win of the day. He opened the afternoon by capturing the Breeders' Cup Distaff on Azeri. Vindication won $500,000 to bring his earnings to $625,000. He is now 4-for-4 on the season. Vindication returned $10.20, $6.20 and $4.00. Kafwain paid $16.00 and $8.40, and Hold That Tiger paid $4.60. The 2003 Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships will be held at Santa Anita Park. The races will be run on Saturday, October 25.
