Please note that the distance this year has increased from 1 1/16 miles to 1 1/8 miles due to the layout of the track.
Storm Flag Flying made it two straight wins for favorites, defeating Composure by a half-length to win the Juvenile Fillies. The two-year-olds competed at 1 1/8 miles for the first time in Breeders' Cup history.
Storm Flag Flying battled Composure down the stretch. The winner stopped the timer at 1:49 3/5. Finishing third was Santa Catarina, with Sea Jewel gaining fourth in the 10-horse field.
The pace was set by Humorous Lady with a pack, including Storm Flag Flying, trailing. Heading into the final turn, Santa Catarina took the lead with Storm Flag Flying and Composure closing. At the top of the stretch, Composure took a short lead over the eventual winner. However, Storm Flag Flying dug in to catch and pass Composure.
Storm Flag Flying is owned by Ogden Phipps and trained by Shug McGaughey. Regular jockey John Velazquez guided the two-year-old to her fourth win in as many starts. The $520,000 increases her earnings to $1 million and assures an Eclipse Award.
Storm Flag Flying returned $3.60, $2.60 and $2.20. Composure paid $3.40 and $2.80, while Santa Catarina paid $3.00.
The 2003 Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships will be held at Santa Anita Park. The races will be run on Saturday, October 25.
