Domedriver found an opening in the late stretch to win the $1 million Mile. With the turf course listed as yielding, Domedriver covered the one mile in 1:36 4/5.
Domedriver, ridden by Thierry Thulliez, was caught in the middle of a mass of horses in mid-stretch. With about 100 yards from the finish, Domedriver edged away from the field to capture the Mile by 3/4 of a length. Odds-on favorite Rock Of Gibraltar finished strong for second, with Good Journey third and Forbidden Apple fourth.
Domedriver is owned by Flaxman Holdings and trained by Pascal Bary. The four- year-old has won six of 16 lifetime starts for almost $800,000, including $500,000 for this victory. Domedriver races primarily in France, where he won twice this year.
Domedriver returned $54.00, $18.20 and $5.80. Rock Of Gibraltar paid $3.40 and $2.60, while Good Journey paid $3.60 for show.
Landseer did not finish the race after breaking a leg under jockey Edgar Prado. Landseer was humanely destroyed.
The 2003 Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships will be held at Santa Anita Park. The races will be run on Saturday, October 25.
