Orientate became the third winning favorite in four races to begin day, overtaking Thunderello in deep stretch to capture the Sprint. Ridden by Jerry Bailey, Orientate was near the lead up the back-stretch in the six-furlong event. At the top of the home stretch Orientate drew even with Thunderello. The two sprinters battled down the stretch until Orientate opened a half-length margin at the wire. Finishing third was Crafty C.T. and Kona Gold was fourth. Kona Gold won the Breeders' Cup Sprint in 2000. The time for the six furlongs was 1:08 4/5. Orientate is owned by Robert and Beverly Lewis and trained by D. Wayne Lukas. The four-year-old added $500,000 to his bankroll for a total of better than $1.6 million. Orientate returned $7.40, $5.00 and $3.80. Thunderello paid $33.00 and $13.00, and Crafty C.T. paid 9.00. The 2003 Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships will be held at Santa Anita Park. The races will be run on Saturday, October 25.
