Morning-line favorite Sky Mesa was scratched on Friday because of an injured right front ankle.
The injury to the two-year-old colt developed Thursday night and was discovered Friday. Sky Mesa is owned by John Oxley and trained by John Ward and his wife, Donna.
Ward said preliminary X-rays revealed a soft filling in Sky Mesa's ankle, rather than a more serious sprain or cracked cannon bone. The colt will undergo further tests in the next seven-to-10 days.
European invader High Chaparral outfinished With Anticipation to win the $2 million Turf. The time for the 1 1/2 miles was 2:30.14 on a yielding course.
The field of eight was taken through the first part of the race by The Tin Man, who led as the seven other runners were in a tight group.
The Tin Man remained on the lead until the 1/8th pole. High Chaparral passed the leader in mid-stretch on his way to a 1 1/4 length victory. With Anticipation gained second with Falcon Flight third and The Tin Man fourth.
High Chaparral is owned by Michael Tabor and Susan Magnier. Aidan O'Brien trains and Michael Kinane rides. The three-year-old picked up $1 million for the win and has captured seven of nine lifetime starts for more than $3.4 million. Earlier this year High Chaparral won the Irish and Epsom Derbies.
High Chaparral returned $3.80, $3.00 and $2.60. With Anticipation paid $5.20 and $4.20,and Falcon Flight paid $5.20.
The 2003 Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships will be held at Santa Anita Park. The races will be run on Saturday, October 25.
